  • Conduct secondary and primary monitoring research on tobacco industry activities and key tobacco control issues to support communication and advocacy efforts.
  • Build tobacco control advocates’ capacity to effectively conduct monitoring research on tobacco industry practices and key tobacco control issues to discredit and counter the tobacco industry activities.
  • Coordinate and support in-country advocates’ efforts to monitor and conduct research on the tobacco industry practices and key tobacco control issues.
  • Develop new and/or adapt existing tobacco industry monitoring tools to allow systematic collection, compilation and analysis of data on the tobacco industry by in-country project partners.
  • Prepare briefing papers, fact sheets, reports, presentations, written testimony and media materials.
  • Serve as a resource for information and analysis on tobacco industry practices to staff, tobacco control advocates, policymakers, stakeholders and the public.
  • Respond rapidly and efficiently to in-country requests for technical assistance related to tobacco industry interference.
  • Maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with the international civil society community.
  • Perform any other cognate duties as assigned by the Executive Secretary of ATCA.

selection criteria

  • Knowledge of research methods, including research study design and analysis.
  • Ability to consume research, evaluate for rigour and applicability, and translate for tobacco control policy formulation and advocacy.
  • Ability to turn findings of research into useful products for policy makers, advocates and the media.
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills and ability to translate numbers for general consumption.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of computer software applications including Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Advanced data analysis skills, particularly using Excel to manage and interprete large amounts of data.
  • Knowledge of the legislative and policy-making environment preferred.
  • Excellent research writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Well-organized, disciplined and resourceful in conducting research; extreme attention to details.
  • Established commitment to tobacco control preferred.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with organizations and teams.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while dealing with multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Research experience in tobacco control, public health policy, or public health economics preferred.
  • Significant experience conducting secondary research and applying to the policy advocacy environment.
  • Proficiency in English and French, both written and spoken.
