Mathiwos Wondu

Mathiwos , the third and youngest son of his parents Mr. Wondu Bekele and Mrs. Amsale Beyene, was born on June 17, 1999 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Until he celebrated his second birthday he was very healthy, energetic and his growth was corresponding to his age. A few days after celebrating his second birthday, heun-expectedly became very ill, and after clinical investigation he was confirmed to be ALL-type Leukemia Cancer patient.

Seventh General Assembly meeting of Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society (MWECS)

The Seventh General Assembly meeting of Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society was held on, Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the GIZ, German House-Conference Center.

Mr.Zemichael Barnabas, Depty Chairman of the General Assembly of MWECS chaired the meeting. More than 68 members, cancer patients and their families attended the meeting. The Assembly reviewed and accepted membership application request made by 79 candidate members of which 15 are students while the remaining 64 are holding various positions in various government and non-government organizations. It also reviewed and approved operational report, financial statement and external audit report of the 2010 budget year and operation, manpower, capital budget and action plan of 2011 budget year.

The Assembly also reviewed and approved the first strategic plan, financial and personnel manuals of MWECS.It also made few amendments concerning the delegation of appointing external auditor to the management board and extending the time to conduct the general assembly meeting after the end of the budget year from one month to three months and finally approved compact organizational structure proposed by the secretariat to strengthen the management of the society and allow secession plan for future  manpower development and maintenance of society’s human resources.

The General Assembly was briefed by Mr.Wondu Bekele, the General Manager of MWECS, member of Non-Communicable Diseases Committee, formed under the Ministry of Health, the leading role played by MWECS in developing and implementing the first strategic framework on non-communicable diseases and establishment of the Ethiopian NCD Consortium (ENCDC). The overall objective of which will be to coordinate the activities of member organizations, help enhance the capacity of members, coordinate joint awareness and prevention activities,etc.Finally, taking in to account the recently developed guideline on how to form consortium of association and the support and encouragement being given by the government and the various advantages of consortium, the assembly appreciated the request and gave consent to Mr.Wondu Bekele to represent the Society and be one of the founding members of the consortium. The assembly delegated Mr.Wondu Bekele to sign memorandum of understanding with government and non-government organizations on cancer related activities and on how to enhance the capacity of the society and improve the treatment of cancer in general and pediatric cancer in particular.
