Palliative and Hospice Care for Children

Mathiwos Wondu-YeEthiopia Cancer Society (MWECS) is implementing palliative and hospice care project at the Black Lion Hospital. The total cost of the project is Birr 120,000(USD 9,231) of which Birr 70,000 (USD5, 385) donated by Ambassadors and Heads of Mission Spouses Group here in Ethiopia and the remaining Birr 50,000 (USD 3,846) was raised by the students of Addis Ababa, during a walk program we organized last February 10, 2009 to commemorate the World Cancer and World Child Cancer Days here in Addis Ababa. The project lasts for six months of time, up-to May, 2010.Origionally we planned to help only selected poor children suffering from cancer, but once we started implementing the project we came to realize that almost all children and their families are desperately looking for every kind of help especially medicines.

Thanks to new clinical findings and improvements in cancer treatment curing rate of pediatric cancer in developed countries surpassed 75%, but the rate is estimated to be below 20% here in Ethiopia. Due to this pediatric cancer patients are needlessly dying. We are very optimistic that provided we improve treatment condition here in Ethiopia greatly decrease the death of children and their sufferings.

Cancer is not a battle that one can fight and win in isolation and we look forward to the professional, moral and material support of willing individuals and organizations like yours in order to make a difference.
